The monument consists of a hardstone stele, designed by Henry Van de Velde, and a bronze sculpture representing a volunteer of the Belgian Revolution, with a palm branch, also in bronze, at his feet.

On the stele above the figure, a medallion depicts Count de Mérode in profile.

He was wounded at the Battle of Berchem and died in Mechelen during the independence struggles in 1830.

The monument itself is in a pure floral Art Nouveau style, sculpted by Paul Dubois based on Van de Velde's plans, and was inaugurated in 1898.

The entire monument is well-preserved and stands proudly in the completely restored square, which has regained all its former splendor.
