Born in Frameries on December 11, 1859, and died in Brussels on January 17, 1901. Considered, with Victor Horta, as one of the founders of Art Nouveau.
Paul Hankar built his own house on Rue Defacq in 1893, at the same time as Horta’s Hôtel Tassel was being built. Two completely different houses.
The Hankar House still has a lot of classic 19th century elements and some Art Nouveau accents.
He will build 4 years later the splendid Ciamberlani hotel on the same rue Defacq.
His most "coup de fouet" work is the window of the former Niguet shirt factory (1896) Rue Royale.
Paul Hankar will teach at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he will have as students, among others, Paul Hamesse and Léon Sneyers.
